Tied on a jig hook with a slightly overweighted bead, the Copperhead is a versatile nymph designed to imitate both mayflies and caddis across a wide range of rivers. I developed this pattern to serve as a dependable, go-anywhere fly that fishes equally well under an indicator, in a dry-dropper setup, or as part of a Euro-nymphing rig. What sets the Copperhead apart is its unique color blend, but also taking elements from different patterns: natural hare’s ear dubbing combined with copper wire, a copper bead, and subtle flash to create a buggy profile and an effective hot spot. The jigged hook, oversized bead, CDC, and balanced weight give the fly a modern feel and excellent sink rate while maintaining lifelike movement. Simple, durable, and highly effective, the Copperhead has proven itself across multiple fisheries and consistently produces fish.
